On March 28th 2019 four pupils in age from 11 to 13 took part in a workshop entitled “Concrete – What is it?”, offered by the Institute of Structural Concrete as part of RWTH Aachen University’s “Girls’ Day” activities. A guided tour through the laboratories of the institute and explanations of the various testing facilities provided insight into concrete construction and its applications. Bending tests on polystyrene with and without reinforcement showed the students the load-bearing behaviour of reinforced concrete. The highlight of the day was a four-point bending test on a reinforced concrete beam. The pupils were able to observe the cracking and deformation of the beam until failure. Together with Institute staff, the pupils mixed coloured concrete and manufactured refrigerator magnets as a souvenir of their visit.
