On April 26th 2016 twelve girls ranging in age from 11 to 13 took part in a workshop entitled “Concrete – What is it actually?”, offered by the Institute of Structural Concrete as part of RWTH University’s “Girls’ Day” activities. A guided tour through the Institute’s testing facilities and an introduction to various departments provided insight into concrete construction and its applications. The girls witnessed a bending test utilizing Styrofoam with and without reinforcement. The highlight of the day was a four-point bending test on a reinforced concrete beam. The girls were able to observe the cracking and deformation of the beam until failure. Together with Institute staff, the girls mixed coloured concrete and manufactured refrigerator magnets as a memento of their visit.
